BEVERLY HILLS, MICHIGAN – For a guy whose game apparently depends on a steady diet of Matchbox 20, Goo Goo Dolls and Gin Blossoms, Paul somehow found a way to throw lights out all night.

Paul finished 3-1, finally breaking free from a slump that had lingered for more than a month. Paul entered the night ranked 13th in the league, carrying a 16.7 KPM built on 5.3 points per round (“PPR”), 74% accuracy and 1.2 cornholes per round—numbers well below what we’ve come to expect from one of the league’s better shooters.

Tonight? He got himself back on track in a big way. Paul averaged 7.7 PPR, 2.1 cornholes per round and 90% accuracy, which produced a 25.0 KPM. Whether this was a one-night blip or the start of a second-half surge remains to be seen. But if Paul keeps throwing 25.0 KPM, nobody will want to see him once the final two championships arrive.

GAME OF THE NIGHT

We jump to Game 13, which pitted Brent and Erik against Nick and Craig. When Game 13 was called, Nick and Brent were too busy talking to realize they were up next. Erik was doing Erik things somewhere in la-la land and needed multiple reminders to make his way to the boards. Craig was the only adult in the room, grabbing bags and warming up while waiting for the other three to remember they were supposed to be playing cornhole.

That pregame circus foreshadowed exactly how the match would begin. Craig came out ready to play while everyone else looked like they were still in the blocks waiting for the starter’s pistol.

Nick and Brent started off red-hot (note the sarcasm) with a 5-2 round to open the match. Craig followed up with an 8-3 advantage over Erik, making the score 8-0.

Craig continued his hot start, throwing four straight bags into the hole in the fourth round to build what looked like an insurmountable 15-3 lead. At that point, Brent and Erik looked like they were one bad round away from Brent running back to the sidelines to hold hands with his girlfriend. Nick wasn’t giving Craig much support, but Craig was playing well enough to carry the load.

Craig’s right arm giveth, and Craig’s right arm taketh away. After carrying the opening half of the match, his stroke suddenly disappeared just as Erik found his. Erik won the eighth and 10th rounds 7-2 and 7-3, respectively. Those nine points were the bookends to Brent hammering Nick in the ninth round, 9-3.

In the span of three rounds, Brent and Erik erupted for 15 points. What had been a comfortable 16-5 advantage quickly became a 20-16 deficit. One minute Craig looked like the hero. Three rounds later he was desperately hoping someone could stop the bleeding.

Brent put the finishing touches on this comeback victory when he threw his second-consecutive 9-point round, this time a 9-7 advantage in the 11th round.

The comeback felt impossible when the score reached 16-5. Erik and Brent had shown almost nothing to suggest a rally was coming.

Craig will unfortunately be saddled with the choke, but anyone who watched the game knows where the blame belongs. He carried the team to a double-digit lead while Nick disappeared. Nick managed more than five points in just one of his six rounds, averaged only 4.8 PPR and spent most of the game hemorrhaging points to Brent. Craig deserved better.

MUSHROOM STAMP MOMENT

Most players need a game or two to find their rhythm. Austin apparently wakes up in rhythm.

He announced his arrival by dropping a four-bagger in his opening round, hanging 10 points on Flowers during a brutal 12-2 opening salvo. Austin finished that game with a 9.8 PPR while leading his team to an easy 21-8 victory.

Austin won three of his first four matches while averaging 7.9 PPR and outscoring his opponents by 1.6 points every round (i.e., his opponents averaged 6.3 PPR).
