BEVERLY HILLS, MICHIGAN – The latest offseason was a little colder, and felt a little longer, than usual. To help fight the winter blues, nine of the Gentlemen took their talents to a league at the Berkley American Legion, and Roger hosted us at The Barn twice during the dog days.
Of course those venues are great, providing opportunities to play and continue seeing one another. However, the game just feels different on that first cool April night when we gather to begin a new season.
The 2025 campaign marks the 10-year anniversary for LEG, an achievement equally satisfying and unbelievable. When LEG started in 2016, it was designed to wrangle friends together in an attempt to see each other more often because various life demands began pulling at the fabric of our friendship, testing the strengths of it’s thread. Not even in my wildest dreams did I believe we’d still be here, doing this, 10 years later while also expanding the friendship group to more incredible guys…one might say it’s Extraordinary.
GAME OF THE NIGHT
Kicking off the 2025 Games of the Night was the father-son duo of Jake and Flowers against Mike V. and Bushie. This Game 4 tilt was easily the best match of the night – all other six games were decided by 8 or more points, including five games decided by double digits. Not at all an uncommon trend early in the season when rust is getting knocked off.
Game 4 was a dandy. Bushie and Mike V. were productive in the first two rounds of the game, taking a 6 – 0 lead thanks to four points from Bushie and two from Mike V.
Jake ignited his squad in the third round with a 10-3 advantage over Mike V., and Flowers added two more points for a quick 9-0 run. Jake tacked on another four points in the fifth round with an 8-4 advantage, giving his team a 13 – 6 lead.
Meanwhile Flowers had the unenviable task of holding off a surge from Bushie – over the next three rounds from these two (rounds 6, 8 and 10), Bushie averaged 7 points per round (“PPR”) and Mike V. chipped in three more points to aid in his team capturing a 16 – 15 lead.
Bushie’s hot stretch could have ended the game, but Flowers held firm averaging 5 PPR to yield only six points across those three rounds. If that doesn’t sound impressive, consider one of the rounds was a 10-4 advantage for Bushie and it’s clear how hard Flowers battled to extinguish Bushie’s fire.
In the 11th round Jake dropped the hammer, draining three bags en route to a 10-3 clobbering, securing a 21 – 16 victory for team father-son.
Jake gets the glory, but his moment wouldn’t have been possible without Flowers’ fight in the middle rounds.
MUSHROOM STAMP MOMENT
How appropriate that Game 1 of the season earns the Mushroom Stamp Moment (“MSM”) – Jake and KP dealt Flowers and Mike V. a bun run from jump street. Credit to the streakers, they battled seven rounds hoping to earn a point, but couldn’t pull it off.
The game, not an individual moment, earns this week’s MSM. Flowers and Mike V. had reprieve from a naked lap around the yard because of the cool, crisp April breeze. But you better believe we are going to hold them accountable for this, and those buns will parade around the yard very soon.
